Mulch

Mulch works like a blanket over the soil and protects it from the drying effects of the sun and wind.

It also helps to keep the soil cooler in summer and warmer in winter.  Moisture stays in the soil longer which means less watering. Mulch suppresses weeds by preventing sunlight from reaching the soil.

Organic Mulch will improve your soil structure by encouraging worms and other soil organisms back into the soil.  As they feed on the mulch organic matter is spread through the layers of the soil increasing fertility of the soil. Organic mulch refers to any mulch made from matter which was once alive or part of a living thing.  Over time it breaks down into humus; the vital ingredient in fertile soils.

We stock several types of mulches broken into two main categories, premium or decorative and a budget/composting mulch.

Apply new mulch at least once a year, after weeding.  It should be applied at a depth of 75mm-100mm.  Keep mulch clear of plant trunks to avoid collar rot.
